Significance And History Of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day dates back to the Roman Empire, enough for humankind to make it the strangest holiday. Although no one knows the exact origin of Valentine’s Day, the most popular theory is that the celebration is in honor of Saint Valentine, a Roman priest.
The Catholic Church now recognizes at least two martyrs, including Saint Valentine, whose real-life man behind the holiday is difficult to identify. Both lovers were sacrificed by the Roman emperor Claudius in the third century. The two are believed to have died on February 14, though years apart. However, it is widely thought to commemorate Saint Valentine of Terni, who the Roman Emperor Claudius II assassinated. A priest, he was known for secretly performing Christian weddings for Roman troops and preaching Christianity before it was legalized.
Thus, he was put under house arrest because he refused to renounce his faith. While serving his sentence, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and soon regained sight. The entire household believed in the real power of God. The news reached the emperor, and it was announced that Valentine would be hanged on February 14. On his execution, he sent a letter to the jailer’s daughter, signed “From Your Valentine.”
