Artificial Sun by China – Is it really useful?

The Sun is the biggest source of energy in the galaxy. It produces energy through a nuclear fusion reaction. It happens when the hydrogen atoms collide each other and fuse at very high temperatures around 15 degree centigrade under tremendous gravitational force. Every moment, around 600 million tons of hydrogen are fused to generate helium. During this procedure, hydrogen atoms turns in to energy. China’s, the all new artificial sun has set a new world record by super heating a roiling loop of plasma to temperatures 5 times more hotter than the sun for more than 17 minutes.

China has made a new progress in its development of a ‘man-made Sun.’ The suns are fusion energy reactors. Scientists hope they can create them to provide an endless supply of clean energy. They work by stimulating the nuclear process in the sun. When two atoms fuse under extremely high temperature, they create colossal amounts of energy. The sun is able to sustain temperature as high as 70 million degree Celsius for 1056 seconds. This is a new world record.

This artificial sun is named as HL-2M and this is a tokamak reactor of nuclear-fusion that is situated at the Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP) in Chengdu, China. The reactor creates power by administering powerful magnetic fields to hydrogen to wedge it until creates a plasma that can held temperatures of more than 150 million degrees Celsius, ten times higher in heat than nucleus of the Sun, and creates larger amounts of energy when the atoms fuse together. The plasma contains magnets and super cooling technology.

Nuclear Fusion is a method which produces enormous energy without creating much nuclear waste. This is the dedicated source of energy. When the entire world sets new aims for clean energies, the artificial sun gives lots of expectations to the world. This is arguably the best way to generate energy for human beings. Deuterium and tritium are the main raw materials for this process and these can be easily found in oceans. Nuclear fusion is completely environment-friendly because it doesn’t create much harmful radio-active wastes.

The production of nuclear fusion energy may lead to solve the China’s energy demands. This will also supply for the future sustainable progress of China’s energy and national economy development. The Chinese Energy Agency’s main aim is to evolve a reliable form of nuclear fusion based on this concept. Fusion is treated prohibitively expensive, but this testing might help the researchers in their hunt for ways to reduce expenses. The entire process does not end in producing large quantities of nuclear waste. Another process is called fission where the atoms split. It is more often used by power plants and nuclear weapons. Fission creates nuclear waste but on contrary to fusion is easier to achieve.

Apart from EAST ( Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak), China is also functioning the HL-2A reactor that is called as J-TEXT. This experimental reactor has a remarkable growth in China’s nuclear power research capabilities. This project consists of contribution to various other countries like South Korea, India, Japan, Russia and the United States of America. The EAST project is a part of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) facility.

China is looking forward to achieve the economical production of fusion energy by the year 2050 and it is advisable that this country would believe in the thought even when others discard it believing it can be risky, and arguably hopeless. ITER has also been working on its own reactor in France, It is expected to be completed in 2025.
